Description

Based on studies carried out en plein air, the French painter imagined an idealised view, inspired by one of the most famous villas in Frascati. This is Villa Ruffinella, also known as Villa Tuscolana, which was ceded by Pope Pius VII in 1804 to Luciano Bonaparte.

Chauvin tackled the same subject in two other similar paintings, one privately owned and another at the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. This latter served as a comparison for Prof. Valter Curzi, who, having recently studied the painting here at Palazzo Butera proposed a new interpretation.
