THOMAS JONES, 1742-1803

THOMAS JONES, 1742-1803

We have a great deal of information about Thomas Jones’s life, thanks to the autobiography he wrote, which was published in 1951. He trained under Richard Wilson, a more conventional but influential landscape painter in late 18th-century London. Thomas Jones developed considerably as an artist when he travelled to Italy in 1776, returning in 1783. For the time, his depictions of urban scenes and Italian landscapes were of extraordinary freshness and originality.
