JOSEPH WRIGHT OF DERBY (1734-1797)

Joseph Wright of Derby is one of the greatest English artists of the eighteenth century. His art is often associated with the innovations of the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, due to his association with scientists from the Lunar Society of Birmingham.

The self-portrait on the side, exhibited in Melbourne (National Gallery of Australia), portrays the artist when he was about thirty years old.
